‘I’m not rich. I work full-time and budget tightly. Having another adult live here for free is stressing me out’: 24-year-old cousin turns “just a few weeks” into six months of rent-free living, and dares to complain when 27-year-old host asks for rent

  • AITA for charging my cousin rent when he “just needed a place for a few weeks” and it’s been six months?

  • Back in March my cousin (24M) asked me (27F) if he could crash at my apartment for a few weeks while he figured out his next steps.
  • He had just quit his job, broken up with his girlfriend, and said he just needed some breathing room.

  • I live alone in a two-bedroom, so I told him sure but made it clear this wasn't a long-term setup.

  • At first it was fine. He bought some groceries, did his laundry, and was generally respectful.

  • But weeks turned into months, and now we're in September and he's still here. He hasn't gotten a new job, spends all day gaming, and his groceries are basically just energy drinks and frozen pizza.

  • I pay all the utilities, and he eats most of my food without replacing it. Last week I sat him down and said that if he's going to keep living here, he needs to contribute.

  • I asked for 400 a month which is way less than half the rent and cheaper than anywhere else around here.

  • He blew up and said I was taking advantage of family and that I had promised him a safe place to get back on his feet.

  • He says charging him rent is cruel when he's still figuring things out. I told him that six months is more than enough time to get back on your feet, and I'm not running a free hotel.
    via DannYXxXDesirE
  • He's been sulking ever since and told my aunt, who now keeps texting me saying I'm heartless and that family comes before money.
    via DannYXxXDesirE
  • For context, I'm not rich. I work full-time and budget tightly. Having another adult live here for free is stressing me out financially and mentally.
    via DannYXxXDesirE
  • I don't think 400 is unreasonable, but now half my family thinks I'm being cold and selfish.

  • mariehotwife84 NTA. Six months is way past "just a few weeks." Asking him to contribute is completely reasonable. You're not running a charity.

  • OP DannYXXXDesirE Thanks! I honestly thought $400 a month was generous considering the rent and utilities. Feels crazy that half my family thinks I'm the bad one.

  • Cookies_2 Tell your aunt she can take him if she feels so strongly about this.
    via Cookies_2
  • OP DannYXXXDesirE Totally, I'm done arguig and I'm not his free Airbnb.
    via DannYXxXDesirE
  • Zestyclose-Height-36 Nta. tell him to move back to mommy.
    via Zestyclose-Height-36
  • OP DannYXXXDesirE Haha right? He's old enough to figure his own stuff out.

  • ParalyzedAndPretty NTA dude, six months is a long a time to be "figuring things out". 400 bucks a month ain't much, esp when ur footing the bill for everything else. Fam or not, this ain't charity, it's basic respect. Your aunt wanna coddle him, she can let him crash at her place free. Stand ur ground. Shouldn't be on you to harbor a grown man acting like a freeloader.

  • OP DannYXXXDesirE Thanks! I feel like $400 is more than fair and still a bargain compared to rent elsewhere.

  • enaj259 It always makes me laugh when family members give their two cents yet they're not in the situation at all. He is an adult and really it's none of your AUNT'S business. You are not the AH, he needs to pay rent or move on.

  • OP DannYXXXDesirE Thanks, I just want him to contribute or find somewhere else to stay, simple as that.

  • Odd Substance_9032 NTA - cousin needs to GTFU or get out of
    via Odd Substance_9032
  • OP DannYXXXDesirE Thanks, I'm sticking to my guns on this one.

  • Tomorrow-Is-Better Change the WiFi password. He'll get back on his feet immediately if he can't game all day. And stop buying frozen pizza! NTA

  • LaLunaLady1960 " and that family comes before money." I'd be telling your aunt that you will be sending him right over to freeload off of her. ΝΤΑ

  • pkincpmd Tell your aunt you keep providing a roof over his head if auntie kicks in $600.
